Department of Optometry & Radiography
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the only institution in Hong Kong that offers a full-time bachelor's degree and sub-degree programmes in Optometry (BSc, Hons)
Normal Duration: 4 years
Programme Leader: Carly Lam, MSc, PhD, MCOptom, FAAO
Programme Aims: a strong foundation of knowledge and an informed understanding of professional optometry issues; includes understanding civic and community responsibilities as well as keeping abreast of technological and professional developments in the field
Characteristics: clinical training (in two phases – Clinical Laboratory and Optometry Clinic, examining real patients)
Career Prospects: most of the graduates initially enter private optometric practices, then eventually establish their own practices. Optometrists are the main providers of vision care in the community. There are job opportunities in contact lens, ophthalmic instrument or drug companies in the areas of professional services, marketing and management. Postgraduate study opportunities are also available, both in Hong Kong and overseas.
Professional Recognition: As a graduate, eligible for full registration on Part One of the Register with the Optometrists Board of Hong Kong
Programme Structure:
- 4 main areas of study, namely basic sciences, optometric sciences, clinical sciences, and clinical and professional training
- Year One: mainly concentrates on the basic sciences to establish a sound base of knowledge
- Year Two and Three: develop optometric clinical techniques for clinical practice
- Half of Year Three and all of Year Four focus on clinical learning – examining patients and gaining valuable clinical experience
- All honours project conducted in Years Three and Four
The faculty in PolyU was involved with a myopia and aging eye research. Recently, they organized a myopia conference in Hong Kong as well.
